Soon, the days will be gone, when you will be transacting something with 25 paise coin. Yes, according to the public notice put Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the 25 paise coins are going to be ceased i.e. demonetised by 30th June ’11. RBI has also asked to get 25paise coins exchanged at the banks by the tantamount. The reason being given is the inflation.
I don’t know how much it will affect the people at large, as only few people still transact in this denomination. But I would definitely mourn the death of it. Even none of my contemporaries could forget this special coin. Have so many lovable memories of it that it could still fill our eyes with tears. Remember, when we were kids and the moment some redywala came shouting for ice-cream, how we used to run behind him with our 25 paise coin! Could you forget the time when mummy filled our pockets with treasure (25 paise) while leaving for the school, and we were like kings/queens of the world at lunch time. I still remember one incident of mine, when I was a 5 year old kid and just started attending pre-nursery school. One of the mate, I prefer using the term mate as by that age I didn’t know whether he was my classmate, was asking for small package pepsi cone from a stall. He flicked the coin to the stall owner and got the cone. I was just admiring him that how happy and joyful he felt post that. From that day onwards, I used to get a coin daily in my pocket. Sometimes kids are so smart!!
We were the kids who used to die for each 25 paise coin. I still remember how my elder sister and I collected the coins in our piggy banks (we had separate) just to save enough money to get something precious. How pleasurable it was to see the piggy bank growing heavier and heavier and also to hear the sound of so many 25 paise coins together. And remember the numerous quarrels we had just because of some 1-2 25paise coins missing. Even today siblings do fight but now it is for some big denominator notes!!
Leaving behind all those fond memories, I still think RBI has thought right away making it demonetised as it has become worthless in today’s world. Gone are the days when you go buying something and you got it in handful of coins. Now try, go, buying anything; from ice-cream to cookies, chocolates to candies, medicines to fruits, nothing has got a mentioning anything in this denomination. Even if we ask somebody for any smaller coins, the very likely answer would be “Chawanni Athanni toh aajkal bhikhari bhi nahi rakhte”.
So wait for 30th June to come, and no kid will be filling his piggy bank with 25 paise coins anymore!!

ReplyDeleteFor the author...Thanks for bringing those old childhood memories live :)
well said sir..
ReplyDeleteThanks Ashish!
ReplyDeleteYea man very true it was actually unavoidable seeing the inflation level plus changes taken place in the last 15 years.
With High Consumerism and Higher Inflation rates, the beloved 25p was definitely to move out of our Indian society.
ReplyDeleteWhile kids may have cursed it during Maths Problems on Money, it was a real blessing when we wanted to have Pepsi Cola Candy, Fatafat Goli or even Hajmola Candy.
The 25p. will always be remembered and recalled in our tales to our children and our grandchildren!
